Happy Thanksgiving, dear friends!!! I hope you enjoy your dinner tomorrow and please know I am grateful for you!

This week, I wanted to give you ten quick tips for better family finances. Quick and easy 😃

1. Automate as much as possible.

Set up auto-pay for bills and auto-invest for retirement. The less willpower required, the more your money grows. Automation prevents self-sabotage!!

2. Have a “Not Today, Impulse Devil” Rule

Before buying the cute sweater, the robot vacuum, or the 25-pack of scented candles, give it 24 hours. If you still want it tomorrow, go for it. This small trick has saved me literally thousands.

3. Save Something for Yourself First

I know, I know…between kids, groceries, daycare, Target runs, and the Amazon driver you see more than your friends, there’s not much left. But pay future you first, even if it’s $25 a month. Your retirement self will thank you.

4. Make a “Boring Wins” Budget

You don’t need 48 categories and color-coded charts. You need three buckets:

  • Needs/Fixed

  • Wants/Flexible

  • Savings/Debt payoff
If you can track those, congratulations, you’re now ahead of 90% of America.

5. Track Your Net Worth

Your net worth is a snapshot in time. Seeing the big picture helps you make better decisions and reminds you that progress happens over years, not weeks.

6. Teach Your Kids About Money Early

You don’t have to hold a TED Talk in your kitchen. Just narrate real life. Talk about your purchasing/saving/investing decisions out loud. Your children will absorb more than you even know. Tiny lessons now prevent big financial mistakes later (hopefully).

7. Build an Emergency Fund

Yes, fully funding six months of living expenses is the goal. But start with $500. That alone prevents 90% of “OMG we need to put this on a credit card” moments. Small wins add up. Building an emergency fund takes time, keep working at it.

8. Have a Weekly 15-Minute Money Date

Put the kids to bed. Sit with your partner. Open the banking app. Look at what happened this week. High-five each other for one thing you did well. Check your negativity at the door. These conversations don’t have to be stressful.

9. Don’t Compare Yourself to Internet People

You’re not behind. You’re not failing. You’re not everyone else’s curated highlight reel. Half of Instagram is rented, filtered, or financed at 29.99% APR. Stay in your lane, turkeys.

10. Remember: Money Is a Tool, Not a Moral Scorecard

Good people make money mistakes. Tired parents make a lot of money mistakes. You’re allowed to be human. Your job isn’t perfection, it’s progress.

BONUS: Give yourself grace. Learn from your mistakes. Be really clear about what you want your “ideal” life to look like and how money can get you there.
