As Smash Mouth once sang, “my world’s on fire, how ‘bout yours?'“

Everybody loves Smash Mouth, right??

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but everything feels a bit heavy lately. Opening my phone is like I’m unleashing a Pandora’s box of bad news. My natural instinct is to always plan ahead for the future and save for a rainy day, but I often find myself saying, “Screw it, everything sucks! Let’s spend all of our money right now!”

And then I go to bed, and as soon as I close my eyes, I think about my children’s future, my future, all of our futures. And I remember that choosing to save for tomorrow, and not spend every penny today, is an act of optimism, hope, and love for my family.

Should you save every dollar and not spend a cent today? No! That’s not what I’m saying at all! We must find a balance between living for the moment we have now and not completely robbing our future selves.

I know its easy to succumb to the bad news. It’s overwhelming, draining, and I’m tired of the pain and suffering we are bombarded with as much as the next person. Here’s the thing though…believing there will be a tomorrow is an act of resistance. It’s believing that things will be okay, even if you’re not sure how or why. Saving for your future means you aren’t going to allow the powers that be drag you all the way down.

We can live as if every day is our last without fully robbing ourselves of the tomorrow that is very statistically likely. The best way to do this is by setting up automated savings and investing. This is delaying gratification, and your future family will thank you for it.

Delaying gratification in the face of an uncertain future is certainly not easy. We tend to think of delayed gratification as the boring choice, or even a punishment. It’s not. Delayed gratification is how we buy freedom. You’re not saying “no“ forever, you’re saying “not yet, because I want even better options later.”

By automating your savings and investing, you can strike that balance knowing you are setting your future up for success, and the money that’s leftover today? You can spend it without guilt.

Automating your finances and delaying some gratification isn’t about being joyless or rigid. It’s about freeing up your mental energy for things that are actually satisfying.

If you find yourself not feeling great about the future and wanting to live fully right now, I urge you to take a moment and step back from the doom-spending mentality. I see it happening to myself. We get sucked into the algorithm and seek instant gratification over and over and over again. We spend on junk that fills the hole in our heart and mind the algorithm ripped open. Dread and rage keep us addicted to our phones and influence the way we spend money. When there’s no hope, you’re far less likely to do what’s necessary to set yourself up for a successful future.

So friends, I’m telling you to put down the phone. Don’t spend it all today, because tomorrow is going to come and the optimists will rule the day! Save and invest some of your money. Delay a bit of gratification for your own good. I don’t know what the future looks like, but let’s work to make it better than today.

As the great band Smash Mouth once said, “all that glitters is gold, only shootin’ stars break the mold” LOL you guys, I’m just kidding. I’m not ending this post on a Smash Mouth lyric. Did you think I would seriously end an earnest post WITH A LYRIC FROM ALL-STAR BY SMASH MOUTH!?

Do you remember how big this song was in 1999? It ruled the world!! It was crazy! Personally, I think this is Smash Mouth’s best song and if you disagree, you’re wrong:

SOME BIG NEWS!

Speaking of delayed gratification…On Monday, it was publicly announced that my show Vape! The Grease Parody is opening in November off-Broadway!! This show was originally created nearly 8 years ago! I’m over the moon excited. If you’re in or around New York City this fall and winter, I hope you’ll consider seeing Vape! at Theater 555.

You can buy tickets here —> TICKETS TO VAPE

We’re also looking for a few more investors/producers to come onboard to help us give Vape! the long and wonderful life it so deserves. If you’re interested in learning more about joining the Vape! team, please send me an email at [email protected]. Thanks for all the well wishes and I’ll see you at the theater in November!!!!

**Disclaimer: This is not an offer or solicitation to buy any security. Strictly for informational purposes only.**

Here’s a photo of myself, my co-creators and Rachel Dratch before our Vape! benefit concert back in March. I gave birth 3 weeks later if you’re wondering why I have a basketball under my dress.
